Body & Soul: An Overview (7347 KB)
EQL is proud to have brought the scientific, evidence-based Body&Soul health promotion program to churches in Southern Nevada. The story of this fruitful union begins when the Health Commission of First AME Church surveyed congregants regarding their personal, family and community health concerns in 2006. The responses showed significant incidence and prevalence of heart disease, cancer and diabetes – all chronic diseases which have a diet and physical activity connection. Many of the congregants indicated an interest in a program that would demonstrate healthy eating behaviors, and the Commission consulted EQL and undertook an examination of evidenced based programs designed for this purpose. In 2007, the Commission worked with its Prevention Partner EQL and piloted Body&Soul, a health promotion program for African American churches designed to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables among congregants.

The Curriculum. The Body&Soul Program nourishes an environment for churches to embrace and celebrate good health through healthy eating. The program teaches the congregation to learn how health and spirituality are connected; feel empowered to take charge of their health; eat more fruits and vegetables every day; live healthier in other ways, such as eating less fat and getting more physical activity; and gain access to vital health information at the church.
Our Focus. The EQL/FAME B&S program features the addition of trained Advocates who participate in a 30-hour education workshop focusing on diet and nutrition. They are tasked with the responsibility of carrying out EQL/FAME B&S food demonstrations, creating and implementing a church health policy, and ensuring that healthy eating activities are conducted in various church auxiliaries and committees using mini-grants as a funding source. The population serviced through EQL/FAME Body&Soul consists of the entire church congregation, all programs and committees as well as the North Las Vegas community in which it is housed.
With the guidance and coaching of EQL Experts, the Body&Soul program implementation, the Health Commission has received multiple sources of external funding (federal, and local health department) for its program and support from local charities including Three-Square. The Advocate program was recently proven highly successful in a program wide evaluation and the local health district supported an expansion of the program with funds to ten other Las Vegas churches.
